PASTORAL SERVICE ORGANIZATION

EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH:

Adult Literacy: Literacy volunteers work on an individual basis with persons with specials needs, helping them with reading, writing, and developing basic skills.  Classes are held on campus. John Manganaro '03, Kaitlyn Wroblewski '05

CCD: Volunteers teach religion to children in parishes in and around Providence; they spend about and hour a week at the parishes.  Chairperson: Sarah Karg '04 .

ESL (English as a Second Language): Volunteers are committed to teaching English to those who have another first language. Classes are held on campus.  Chairperson: Dana Couzens '04 .

St. Mary's Home for Children: Become a tutor and friend to a child at St. Mary's and help that child beat the odds society has stacked up against him/her.  Chairperson: Lisa Fortin '03 .

A volunteer and her tutee:
Student Tutoring Tutoring: Make a difference in the future by tutoring children in one of the neighborhood schools (V.I.P.S) or tutoring youngsters in math and science (Times 2 +). Times2+ also includes City Girls, which is a mentor program for girls in their early teens. Malissa Iannino '05
 
 

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY:

Volunteers will be able to work with Habitat for Humanity to help build the Olneyville community through participation in Saturday work projects, mentoring programs, office work, and community activities.  Student groups also participate in the Habitat Collegiate Challenge, joining students from around the country in an "Alternative Spring Break" to build homes with Jesus' poor.  Chairpersons: Stacey Donfrancesco '05 .

HOSPITAL OUTREACH:

Hasbro Children's Hospital: Do you love to work with children? Join the PSO volunteers who bring Christ's compassion and love to many sick children in a bright, cheerful, state of the art hospital for children.

Rhode Island Hospital: Work with out-patients as well as in-patients of all ages and interact with their families.  Enrich your life and your community while developing new skills.  Free parking for volunteers.

Roger Williams Medical Center: Lots of opportunities to interact with patients and families at a local hospital (walking distance from PC).
 

SOCIAL JUSTICE OUTREACH/ADVOCACY:

Social Justice offers PC students a way to make a compassionate response to societal problems and to help advocate for social change to remedy injustices.

Social Justice
Help the PSO and PC students to become more knowledgeable of social justice issues, to make a compassionate response to societal problems and to help advocate for social change to remedy injustices. Chairpersons: Laura Meneses '03, Erin Smith '04

AIDS Awareness & Outreach:Volunteers work to promote awareness and understanding about this social issue.  Students also volunteer to work with children or adults living with HIV/AIDS and raise funds to help send children affected by the disease to "Camp Heartland". Hunger Awareness & Outreach: Students help staff local soup kitchens and work to create an awareness of societal injustices that lead to hunger and homeless. Chairpersons: John Welch '03, Bill DiCenzo

  Outreach to Children: Lend a hand to children at the Smith Hill Day Care or After School programs, at McAuley Village (housing for women and children), or other local centers serving children. Chairpersons: Bridget Domareki '03, Monica Lucey '03, Melissa Ross '04

Outreach to the Elderly: You can bring joy into the life of an older person by "Adopting A Grandparent" or helping out with activities at the nearby senior center. Chairpersons: Patty Schilling '03

SPECIAL EVENTS:

Help with events and activities which benefit either PC or the local community: special programs, parties for needy children or senior citizens, social issue lectures, food drives, Skip-A-Meals, and much more. Chairpersons: Courtney Martin '03 Jennifer O'Melia '03

SPECIAL NEEDS:

Help RI Special Athletes compete in basketball and swimming meets here at PC or assist with therapeutic horseback riding classes at a farm in nearby Massachusetts. Chairpersons:(Special Olympics) Mary Allieta '05 and (Rherapeutic Riding) Jacqueline White '04, Megan Healy '03

TABS FOR TOTS:

Collects soda can tabs to be donated to Ronald McDonald houses which support children with cancer. Dayna Mancini '04

PUBLICITY:
Use your creative skills to help publicize PSO and Campus Ministry Events.  Activities include making posters, creating fliers, publishing advertisements in PC's school paper The Cowl, and regularly updating the PSO/CMC webpage .
