Accessing Netscape Composer:  Open Netscape Navigator and then click on "Communicator" at the top of the screen.  Then choose "Netscape Composer."

Type on the page just as you would with any word processing program and then save your file on a disk.

Adding links to web sites on the World Wide Web:

Type the title of your link, such as PROVIDENCE COLLEGE.
Then highlight the words "Providence College."
Then click on "Link" at the top of your screen.
In the space after "Link to a page location or local file," type in the url for P.C. homepage:  http://www.providence.edu.
PROVIDENCE COLLEGE HOMEPAGE is now a link.

Adding links to your other studentweb pages:

If you have already uploaded another page which you wish to link to your current page, highlight the section of text you wish to make into a link (such as, "annotated web sites").  Click on "link."  Click on "choose file."  Pick the file you wish to link to.  Click on O.K.  You now have a link to, say,  your ANNOTATED WEB SITES.

Inserting Pictures:

When you find an image on the web which you wish to use on one of your studentweb pages, save it by RIGHT-clicking with your mouse and choosing "Save Image As."  Title the image something you can remember and save it to your studentweb disk.  (Write down or otherwise save the url of the site where you took the image, so that you can attribute the source on your web page.)

To insert the image into your Netscape Composer file, move your cursor to the place on the page where you want the image to be.
Then click on "Image" at the top of the screen.
Choose the tab labelled "Image" (not the "link" or "paragraph" tabs).
Click on "Choose File."  In the "Look IN" space, choose the place where you put your image--probably "My Computer--3 1/2 Floppy A."
Click on the name of the image file.
Click on "open."
Click on O.K.
Voila!!  Your image should now appear on the screen!
.

If your image seems too large for the space, you can change its size.
Click anywhere inside the image.  A sort of border will appear on all edges.
Move your cursor slowly to any edge of the image.  A double-sided arrow will appear.  Drag the arrow in toward the center of the picture.  The image will become smaller.  Do the same thing to another side of the picture to get the image back into proportion.

Beneath the image, identify it, indicating where you obtained it and providing a link to the source web site.

Inserting Targets

Suppose you'd like users of your site to be able to return to the top of the page, once they have reached the middle or the bottom.  You can insert a "target" at the top of the page.  To do this, move your cursor to just before the first word on the page and click on "target."
Give your "target" a name, such as "top."
Now, move your cursor to the end of the page and type "return to top."
Highlight "return to top" and click on "link."
Under "select a named target in current page" you will see a list of your targets.  "Top" will be one of the choices (perhaps the only choice so far!).  Choose "top" and click on "O.K."
You can also target sections of your page.  See the list of topics at the top of this page for an example.

USING FTP

Accessing FTP:

In a computer lab, click on "start" and then on "Programs" and then on "WS_ftp."

If you want to download FTP onto your home computer, go to the P.C. Software Repository  at http://internal.providence.edu. (Click on "helpdesk," then on "software repository," then on "internet software.")

Uploading a file to the studentweb:

Open the FTP program.  For "host name" type in "studentweb.providence.edu"
Type in your studentweb user id and your password.

You should now see a screen with two frames.
On the left frame ("local system"), open floppy disk A (if that's where you've saved your studentweb files).
On the right frame ("remote site") open the "public folder."

Find the file on the local system that you want to upload onto the studentweb.
Click on it.  Then click on the center arrow pointing toward the remote site files.
Your file should be uploaded.

If you have inserted any images onto your file, you need to upload them, too.  (using the same procedure as you used to upload the original file)

IMPORTANT NOTE:  YOU MUST GIVE YOUR HOME PAGE  THE FILE NAME OF "INDEX."
