Information
about the Debate
Team
The Debate Team holds meetings twice
a week. All are welcome to attend. You
do not need prior experience to be a member of the Debate Team. While some
of our members debated in high school, many did not.
The Debate Team participates
in a number of activities. We are members of APDA, the American Parliamentary
Debate Association, which is the league that hosts the tournaments
that we attend. The tournaments are debated in parliamentary style,
which means that two teams (with each team consisting of two debaters)
debate against each other. APDA holds tournaments virtually every
weekend throughout the school year, mostly at schools in the Northeast.
We do not attend every tournament, and members are free to pick and choose
which debate tournaments they wish to attend.
The Debate Team also hosts its own
tournament. We have hosted a tournament here at Providence College
in January for the past three
years. Other APDA schools attend our tournament and debate at
it, while the PC Debate Team runs the tournament.
The Debate
Team participates in other speech activities. We have participated
in Harvard's Model United Nations event in Boston. We also hold
on-campus debates, which we have done for the past three years.
Past topics have been euthanasia, abortion, and the legitimacy of George
W. Bush's presidency.
